For professional kitchen and food-processing knives, start with Samuel Staniforth and Granton. For a custom kitchen range with your business branding, Savernake publishes a clear trade-design route. BLOK and Blenheim Forge bring a handmade workshop identity, while Taylor’s Eye Witness, Michael May and Stuart Mitchell offer pocket knives or individual commissions.
The right UK knife manufacturer depends on what you want to sell. Buying an established British brand, commissioning a bespoke knife and developing a repeatable private-label range involve different suppliers and costs. This guide compares eight makers by product, price, trade policy and ordering requirements, then explains when UK sourcing or a China OEM partner makes more sense.

Prices are manufacturer-listed retail examples for October 2026. Trade quotations, shipping and customization depend on the order. MOQ means minimum order quantity; a single retail purchase and a repeat wholesale order have different terms.
Professional kitchen and food processing makers
1 Samuel Staniforth

Founded in 1864, Samuel Staniforth is a family-owned Sheffield maker behind the Smithfield range. Its background in supplying butchers and caterers makes it a practical starting point for buyers building a working-knife assortment.
- 位置: Sheffield, England.
- Product focus: Kitchen, boning and butcher knives, plus specialist tools.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Custom shapes, materials and buyer specifications are offered. Private-label rights and volume pricing require a direct agreement.
- MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and production schedules are not publicly disclosed.
- Price reference: The manufacturer’s Chef Cooks Knife is listed at £49.38.
- 最適な用途: Catering suppliers and retailers seeking task-specific Sheffield-made working knives.
Limitations to consider: The range spans several handle styles and specialist tasks. Build the quotation around exact blade lengths, handles and quantities, then agree which models will remain available for replenishment. A matching collection needs more planning than an individual chef’s knife.
2 Granton

Granton makes its knives entirely in Sheffield and is associated with the scalloped Granton Edge. Its catalogue covers catering and food processing as well as industrial and medical applications, giving buyers a broader choice than a conventional kitchen-only range.
- 位置: Sheffield, England.
- Product focus: Meat, fish, vegetable and bakery knives. The Kitchen Utility Knife has a 13 cm stainless blade and polypropylene handle.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Publishes bespoke design and engraving services. Confirm private-label rights and trade supply directly.
- MOQ and lead time: Not publicly disclosed; request a quotation for the selected blade, edge and handle.
- Price reference: Request a model-specific quotation.
- 最適な用途: Foodservice and processing buyers selecting knives for defined preparation tasks.
Granton describes cryogenic heat treatment and hardness checks for each production run. Its injection-moulded handles are available in black and colour-coded options, with plain or scalloped blade edges.
Limitations to consider: Select samples by workstation: a short utility blade, flexible filleting knife and boning knife solve different problems. Trial grip and cutting performance over a normal preparation shift, and match handle colours to the kitchen’s existing hygiene system.

Custom and handmade kitchen makers
3 Savernake

Savernake is a Wiltshire knife maker offering custom kitchen knives and bespoke development. It also publishes a dedicated business-order route, making it especially relevant to restaurants and small brands planning their first branded knife project.
- 位置: Wiltshire, England.
- Product focus: Custom and bespoke kitchen knives.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Explicitly offers trade design, white-labelling and branding for businesses.
- MOQ and lead time: Trade MOQ is not publicly disclosed. Bespoke work takes 8–12 weeks; a first trade sample can take approximately two weeks once the brief is settled.
- Price reference: Custom knives start at £250; bespoke development starts at £1,250.
- 最適な用途: Restaurants and small brands wanting a managed custom project, including adaptation of an established design.
Limitations to consider: Savernake separates custom choices on an existing design from bespoke development. Agree the included changes, revision charges and ownership of the final drawings, with development costs shown separately from repeat-order pricing.
4 BLOK

BLOK shapes, grinds and finishes its handmade knives individually in Derbyshire. Patterned handles and visible material variation give the range a workshop character that suits a design-led kitchen shop or gift assortment.
- 位置: Derbyshire, England.
- Product focus: Handmade kitchen knives, including the 5-inch Giraffe Resin Paring Knife with O1 carbon steel, red resin and mosaic pins.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Knife-specific OEM and wholesale terms are not publicly disclosed; discuss a retail or branding brief directly.
- MOQ and lead time: Trade MOQ and production timing are not publicly disclosed. Published delivery guidance is generally five working days from dispatch; international orders require direct contact.
- Price reference: £290 for the Giraffe Resin Paring Knife.
- 最適な用途: Specialist kitchen retailers seeking a distinctive handmade carbon-steel product.
Limitations to consider: O1 needs drying and appropriate carbon-steel care, and its appearance changes with use. Explain that care at purchase and agree acceptable resin or finish variation. BLOK provides a guarantee against manufacturing defects; normal wear, cosmetic changes and incorrect care are excluded.
5 Blenheim Forge

Blenheim Forge makes its Forge Collection in Peckham, London, using Japanese blade material. Its small range of task-specific kitchen knives combines local forging with walnut handles and copper ferrules, giving retailers a clear production story to explain.
- 位置: Peckham, London.
- Product focus: Hand-forged kitchen knives. The 175 mm Santoku offers stainless-clad Aogami Super or folded-iron cladding.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Consumer engraving is offered. OEM, private-label and wholesale terms require direct enquiry.
- MOQ and lead time: Trade MOQ is not publicly disclosed. The Santoku page allows two working days to process and ship an order; engraving adds up to seven working days.
- Price reference: £290–£320 depending on cladding, plus £30 for engraving.
- 最適な用途: Premium kitchen retailers and gift buyers who value identifiable workshop production.
Limitations to consider: Stainless cladding reduces the reactive surface, while the exposed carbon-steel edge still needs care. Folded-iron cladding develops more patina. Make the selected construction and hand-washing guidance part of the product listing so customers choose the right version.
Pocket knife makers and bespoke workshops
6 Taylor’s Eye Witness

Taylor’s Eye Witness traces its Sheffield knife-making history to 1838 and now operates a broader kitchenware business. For this shortlist, the relevant offer is its Sheffield-made Premier Collection pocket knives, described by the company as handmade collector pieces produced in limited numbers.
- 位置: Sheffield, England.
- Product focus: The Premier pocket-knife collection, rather than the company’s entire kitchenware catalogue.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Enquire directly for the trade catalogue and account terms. A private-label programme for this range is not publicly disclosed.
- MOQ and lead time: Not publicly disclosed; availability depends on the current limited-production designs.
- Price reference: Request current model and trade pricing.
- 最適な用途: Specialist pocket-knife retailers and heritage gift collections.
Limitations to consider: The changing, limited-production assortment can make exact replenishment difficult. Agree handle variants, available quantities and a replacement plan for designs that sell through before committing to a long-running promotion.
7 Michael May

Michael May works at Sheffield’s Portland Works, using traditional patterns and equipment acquired from retiring cutler Trevor Ablett. His pocket knives are a good fit for a small, carefully described gift or enthusiast collection.
- 位置: Portland Works, Sheffield.
- Product focus: Traditional pocket knives, including the Bog Oak Lambfoot with an O1 carbon-steel blade, brass bolsters and liners, and a weight of 68 g.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Made-to-order knives are sold directly; private-label and wholesale arrangements require a separate discussion.
- MOQ and lead time: Wholesale MOQ is not publicly disclosed. The Bog Oak Lambfoot is made to order in 4–8 weeks.
- Price reference: £85 for the Bog Oak Lambfoot.
- 最適な用途: Gift and specialist retailers seeking traditional Sheffield pocket knives.

Limitations to consider: Agree acceptable bog-oak variation and carbon-steel care instructions. Use the 92 mm closed length for packaging, rather than the 60 mm cutting edge, and discuss the schedule for a batch of matching pieces before promoting a repeat retail line.
8 Stuart Mitchell

Stuart Mitchell makes bespoke knives in Portland Works, where his family has made knives since 1980. The surviving Victorian metal-trades factory was completed by 1879 and still houses working craftspeople, giving the workshop a direct connection to Sheffield’s cutlery history.
- 位置: Portland Works, Sheffield.
- Product focus: Bespoke field, kitchen and table knives, alongside a small selection of standard patterns.
- OEM and wholesale policy: Individual custom commissions are offered. Repeat-batch, wholesale and private-label terms require direct agreement.
- MOQ and lead time: Not publicly disclosed; discuss the commission and workshop schedule.
- Price reference: Quoted against the design and materials.
- 最適な用途: Buyers with a specific handling, material or cutting requirement that a standard model cannot meet.
Limitations to consider: The website gallery shows previous commissions. Begin with the intended task, reference dimensions, balance and storage requirements, then agree the design, materials, price and delivery schedule. For a repeat collection, include design rights and batch quantities in that agreement.
Compare the ordering route before comparing prices
A £49.38 catalogue knife and a bespoke project starting at £1,250 buy different things. One is an established product; the other includes development. Separate those costs before judging the supplier’s value.
| Order route | What the buyer purchases | What to agree first |
|---|---|---|
| Branded stock | An existing model for use or resale | SKU, authorization, quantity, packaging and replenishment |
| Customized model | An established design with selected changes | Permitted changes, branding rights and approval sample |
| Bespoke development | A knife designed around a new brief | Development fee, revisions, drawings and repeat-order rights |
| Own-brand production | A repeatable product sold under your brand | Specification, minimum order, batch tolerances and quality checks |
UK direct sourcing or China OEM
British provenance can be central to a product’s appeal. A dedicated OEM factory serves a different brief: manufacturing a range around your brand and specifications. UK suppliers include both professional manufacturers and small workshops, so assess actual capacity rather than treating the whole country as one production model.
| Decision | UK direct sourcing | China OEM |
|---|---|---|
| Product story | Named British maker and verified UK production | Your brand and specification, with Chinese manufacture clearly stated |
| Price basis | Catalogue products, handmade work or separately priced development | Quote by materials, quantity and tooling; include packaging and freight |
| 最低注文数 | Maker-specific; single commissions and trade batches have different terms | Agree by design and customization; avoid assuming a universal MOQ |
| リードタイム | Stock dispatch or a workshop slot; May’s example is 4–8 weeks, Savernake bespoke 8–12 | Sample development, production and transport planned separately |
| カスタマイズ | Ranges from engraving to bespoke work; Savernake explicitly offers white-labelling | Dedicated OEM routes can cover blade, handle, logo and packaging |
| Best fit | British-made collections, specialist retail and individual commissions | Buyers developing repeatable own-brand ranges |

How to choose a UK knife manufacturing partner
Get comparable prices and dates
Treat the catalogue price as product positioning; your resale margin comes from the trade quote. Compare the same specification and quantities, including development, packaging, freight and destination charges. Keep sample, production and delivery dates separate: a two-week sample estimate or an in-stock dispatch time does not describe a new production run.
Confirm origin and branding rights
Record the exact range’s factory and country of manufacture on the purchase order. Apply Sheffield or British origin only to the relevant products, particularly when a supplier also distributes other brands. For own-brand orders, agree design ownership and permitted branding explicitly; a consumer engraving option is a separate service.
Specify and test the finished knife
Specify blade length, steel, target hardness, edge geometry, handle, finish and packaging. Our guide to choosing kitchen knife steel explains the material trade-offs. Keep an approved physical sample and test it on the intended food or task, recording grip, food release, cleaning and edge condition.

Hardness is one check. CATRA’s product evaluation treats cutting performance, geometry, handle security and corrosion resistance as separate properties. Match any report to the model and material being purchased. Our knife testing guide helps organize sample and batch checks.
For repeat orders, record the batch, test method, agreed tolerances and defects, including photographs of handle gaps or finish problems. For folders, add blade play and opening and closing checks. Agree who approves material substitutions and how defective batches will be handled before shipment.
Account for UK sales and carrying rules
GOV.UK’s knife guidance says selling most knives to under-18s is illegal, with defined exceptions, including certain non-locking folding pocketknives; Scotland also permits sales of kitchen knives and cutlery to 16- and 17-year-olds. Rules introduced on 6 April 2022 strengthened age checks for remote sales and delivery, so online retailers should arrange compliant purchase and handover checks for the products they sell. Most knives require a good reason for carrying in public; the general exception is a non-locking folding pocketknife with a cutting edge no longer than 3 inches. Check the current guidance and banned categories for each product and sales territory before launch, rather than treating blade length alone as a legality test.
Build your own knife range with LeeKnives
If British manufacture is essential to your product promise, keep it in the brief. If your priority is a repeatable own-brand range, LeeKnives offers a separate China-based production route.

Based in Yangjiang, LeeKnives has supplied OEM knife manufacturing since 1993. Our OEMサービス covers development, sample approval and production, with a published estimate of roughly 30–45 days for mass production after sample approval, depending on the project. For an established design with your branding, consider our private-label service.
よくある質問
Who are the best knife makers in the UK?
Choose by product. Samuel Staniforth and Granton suit professional working knives; Savernake publishes a business branding route. BLOK and Blenheim Forge suit handmade kitchen assortments. Taylor’s Eye Witness and Michael May offer traditional pocket knives, while Stuart Mitchell focuses on bespoke commissions.
Can UK makers supply white label knives?
Some can. Savernake explicitly offers white-labelling and business branding. Other makers publish custom-work options, but the permitted branding, minimum quantity and repeat-order arrangements need to be agreed for the project.
How long does a custom knife order take?
Michael May lists 4–8 weeks for the Bog Oak Lambfoot; Savernake gives 8–12 weeks for bespoke work. These are named examples rather than an industry-wide range. Allow for sample approval, any inspection and delivery to your destination.
What is the difference between custom and bespoke knives?
In Savernake’s terminology, custom means selecting options around an existing design, while bespoke begins with a new brief. Ask what drawings, prototypes and revisions the price includes, because terminology varies between makers.
Can a UK made knife use Japanese steel?
Yes. Blenheim Forge uses Japanese blade material in knives forged in Peckham. Material origin and finished-knife manufacture describe different stages of production and can both be explained accurately in the product listing.
