10 German Knife Manufacturers for Wholesale Buyers

For a German-made kitchen range, start with WÜSTHOF, ZWILLING, F. DICK, GÜDE, Burgvogel and Robert Herder. GIESSER is particularly relevant to professional food processing, while Böker, OTTER and PUMA offer pocket or outdoor options. The strongest shortlist starts with the customer and product category, then compares price, handling and supply terms.

There is one distinction worth making at the outset: a German brand, German blade steel and a knife manufactured in Germany are different claims. This guide compares ten German knife manufacturers through named products and practical buying details. It also separates buying an established brand from commissioning an own-brand knife.

Established kitchen brands

1 WÜSTHOF

Founded in 1814, WÜSTHOF is a family-owned Solingen knife maker known for forged kitchen knives. Its Classic range gives retailers a familiar starting point for a coordinated assortment covering everyday preparation tasks.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany.
  • Product focus: Forged kitchen knives. The Classic 8-inch chef’s knife combines a full tang, full bolster and a published hardness of 58 HRC.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: No publicly advertised OEM or private-label programme. Enquire about branded resale through the appropriate regional trade channel.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and replenishment schedules are not publicly disclosed.
  • Price reference: US$170 for the Classic 8-inch chef’s knife on the US website.
  • Best for: Kitchen retailers building a recognizable, coordinated German-made knife range.

Limitations to consider: Classic’s full bolster creates a substantial feel and a protected heel. Sample it with the intended user and check how the sharpening equipment reaches the rear cutting edge, especially when comparing it with reduced-bolster designs.

2 ZWILLING

ZWILLING dates to 1731 in Solingen and has grown into an international kitchenware group. Its Pro knives are useful for buyers who want an established kitchen brand with a different grip and bolster design from WÜSTHOF Classic.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany; the Pro model below is listed as made in Germany.
  • Product focus: Kitchen knives and related kitchenware. The Pro 8-inch chef’s knife, SKU 38401-203-0, has a forged special-formula steel blade, 55–58 HRC and a curved bolster designed for a pinch grip.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Publishes a wholesale portal for branded products, with no publicly advertised OEM or private-label programme.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and supply schedules are not publicly disclosed. Retail engraving extends delivery time.
  • Price reference: US$169.99 advertised sale price; engraving adds US$14.99.
  • Best for: Kitchen retailers comparing established brands through grip, balance and product-range breadth.

Limitations to consider: The curved bolster is a key reason to sample Pro in person. Compare pinch-grip comfort and heel clearance with the other chef’s knives on your shortlist, and allow additional time if a gift order needs engraving.

Professional and specialist kitchen makers

3 F DICK

F. DICK began in 1778 and is based in Deizisau, Germany. Its combination of knives, sharpening steels and sharpening equipment makes it particularly relevant to buyers supplying professional kitchens and meat-processing businesses.

  • Location: Deizisau, Germany.
  • Product focus: Chef and butcher knives plus sharpening equipment. The German-made Premier Plus range uses forged X50CrMoV15 stainless steel at 56 HRC and a half bolster.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Offers established branded professional ranges; enquire for the appropriate trade supply route. OEM and private-label terms are not publicly disclosed.
  • MOQ and lead time: Not publicly disclosed; request a quotation by series, blade length and quantity.
  • Price reference: Request a trade quote for the selected Premier Plus models.
  • Best for: Foodservice distributors and kitchens prioritizing maintenance, task coverage and replacement supply.

Limitations to consider: Premier Plus’s half bolster leaves the heel accessible for sharpening. Check that advantage against the team’s actual maintenance routine, and select the series and blade lengths around the workstations being equipped.

Simplified side views show a full bolster extending to the heel and a reduced bolster leaving the rear cutting edge exposed
A reduced bolster leaves more access to the heel when sharpening. Simplified geometry, not a drawing of a specific model.

4 GIESSER

GIESSER traces its history to 1776 in Winnenden and specializes in knives for professional food preparation. Its handle systems and task-specific blades make the range especially relevant to repeat-use environments such as processing facilities and commercial kitchens.

  • Location: Winnenden, Germany.
  • Product focus: Kitchen and food-processing knives. Its materials guide describes PrimeLine handles with a polypropylene core and TPE coating, and DET handles containing metal particles for detectability.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Approach the company for professional supply and model-specific trade terms. OEM and private-label conditions are not publicly disclosed.
  • MOQ and lead time: Not publicly disclosed; specify product codes and expected replenishment quantities.
  • Price reference: Request pricing for the exact blade and handle combination.
  • Best for: Food-processing buyers matching grip, flexibility and handle requirements to a defined task.

Limitations to consider: A detectable handle must work with the facility’s detection equipment and procedures. Trial the intended production configuration, including grip material, rather than substituting a visually similar sample. For repeated cutting, assess hand comfort over a normal shift.

5 GÜDE

Founded in 1910, GÜDE is a Solingen maker known for hand-forged kitchen knives and its Alpha series. The range spans several handle materials, allowing a retailer to offer different finishes and price positions around familiar blade formats.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany.
  • Product focus: Forged kitchen knives, including an 18 cm Alpha Nakiri with POM, olivewood or barrel-oak handles.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Markets its own branded ranges. OEM and private-label terms are not publicly disclosed; approach directly for trade terms.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and replenishment timing are not publicly disclosed.
  • Price reference: Alpha Nakiri 18 cm: POM €137, olivewood €169 and barrel oak €179, including tax and excluding shipping.
  • Best for: Premium kitchen retailers building a range with clear handle-material price tiers.

Limitations to consider: Give each handle variant its own photographs, price and care guidance. Sample balance and grip as well as the visual finish, and confirm replenishment separately for the variants you plan to keep in stock.

6 Burgvogel

Burgvogel was founded in Solingen in 1949 and makes forged kitchen knives. Its Oliva Line is a useful option for buyers who want the visual warmth of olivewood rather than a synthetic-handled professional range.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany.
  • Product focus: Kitchen knives, including the Oliva Line 20 cm chef’s knife, model 6860.926.20.0, with forged X50CrMoV15 steel and an olivewood handle.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Branded products are available through its retail shop and trade channels. OEM and private-label terms require direct enquiry.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade MOQ and production schedules are not publicly disclosed. The retail listing gives approximately one week for domestic delivery; foreign delivery differs.
  • Price reference: €121.70 including 19% VAT for the 20 cm Oliva chef’s knife.
  • Best for: Kitchen retailers seeking a forged knife range differentiated by natural wood handles.

Limitations to consider: Agree acceptable wood-grain variation and provide clear handle-care instructions. If supplying a commercial kitchen, check that olivewood suits its cleaning routine before committing to the range.

7 Robert Herder

Robert Herder was founded in 1872 in Solingen and is known for the Windmühlenmesser brand and thin-ground kitchen blades. Its Heritage chef’s knives offer an alternative for buyers who prioritize slicing geometry and a traditional wooden handle.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany.
  • Product focus: Thin-ground kitchen knives. The 18.5 cm Heritage is offered in stainless or carbon steel, with beech or cherry handle variants.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Uses specialist retailers for product sales and offers corporate-logo engraving on blades and/or handles. A broader OEM programme is not publicly advertised.
  • MOQ and lead time: Corporate-order minimums and delivery schedules are not publicly disclosed; request a project quotation.
  • Price reference: Request current pricing from the retailer or a quotation for corporate orders.
  • Best for: Specialist kitchen shops and corporate gift buyers seeking thin-ground knives with an identifiable maker.

Limitations to consider: Herder advises against lateral levering, bone contact and frozen food with the Heritage blade. Explain those boundaries alongside carbon-steel care where relevant; the thin geometry is intended for controlled cutting, not heavy prying.

Pocket and outdoor knife makers

8 Böker

Böker’s Solingen factory dates to 1869, and its tree trademark is familiar to pocket-knife collectors. Its broader catalogue covers several brand families, so a specialist retailer can choose between traditional designs and modern materials.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany, with additional product families manufactured elsewhere.
  • Product focus: Pocket and outdoor knives. The German-made BRLW 112630 has a 2.56-inch MagnaCut blade, 61–62 HRC, titanium handle and frame lock.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Enquire about branded retail supply through the relevant regional channel. OEM and private-label terms are not publicly disclosed.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and model-specific supply schedules are not publicly disclosed.
  • Price reference: US$365 for the BRLW, excluding sales tax and shipping.
  • Best for: Specialist folding-knife retailers able to explain steel, mechanism and product-family differences.

Limitations to consider: Böker’s origin FAQ separates German production from Böker Plus, Böker Arbolito, Magnum and US-made products. Keep the family and exact model together in the assortment file, especially when selling German manufacture as a premium feature.

9 OTTER

OTTER began around 1840 in a water-powered grinding workshop in Solingen. Its Mercator and Ankermesser designs make it a natural candidate for a traditional pocket-knife assortment rather than a general kitchen collection.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany.
  • Product focus: Traditional pocket knives and selected fixed-blade designs, including the Trapper Slim.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Enquire directly for branded trade supply. OEM and private-label conditions are not publicly disclosed.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade minimums and replenishment schedules are not publicly disclosed.
  • Price reference: Trapper Slim €130; stag-horn version €140, including VAT and excluding shipping.
  • Best for: Traditional pocket-knife retailers and heritage gift assortments.

Limitations to consider: Ask for the steel, dimensions and mechanism behind each range name. For stag-horn versions, agree normal appearance variation and whether listing photographs show the individual knife or a representative example.

10 PUMA

PUMA is a Solingen hunting and outdoor knife business with a classic German-made line alongside international product families. The White Hunter is a distinctive starting point for buyers serving traditional hunting and outdoor customers.

  • Location: Solingen, Germany; origin varies across its product families.
  • Product focus: Hunting and outdoor knives. The Solingen-made White Hunter 116375 uses a 155 mm 1.4116 steel blade at 55–57 HRC, a staghorn handle and a leather sheath.
  • OEM and wholesale policy: Enquire about branded trade supply. OEM and private-label conditions are not publicly disclosed.
  • MOQ and lead time: Trade MOQ is not publicly disclosed. The White Hunter listing is for preorder; request its expected dispatch date.
  • Price reference: €349 including VAT.
  • Best for: Hunting and outdoor retailers seeking a traditional fixed-blade product.

Limitations to consider: Plan a White Hunter promotion around confirmed preorder availability. PUMA’s brand guide also distinguishes its classic Solingen line from partner-produced IP, internationally manufactured TEC and SGB, which combines German steel with international processing.

German direct supply versus China OEM and branded wholesale

These routes overlap, but they solve different buying problems. “German direct supply” means approaching the maker about its own products or an explicitly agreed project. “Branded wholesale” means buying established branded stock through an authorized distributor or wholesaler. Neither route automatically includes private-label rights.

For the own-brand route, compare Chinese knife manufacturers against the same product brief. Ask each supplier for a landed-cost breakdown and a delivery schedule rather than assuming one country or channel will always be cheaper or faster.

How to buy the right range

Check whether the maker actually offers OEM

WÜSTHOF and ZWILLING do not publicly advertise OEM or private-label programmes. Treat them as branded-range candidates unless the company agrees otherwise in writing. Likewise, the specialist German makers above should be evaluated on their published services and direct responses, not an assumption that every factory takes private-label work.

There are narrower customization routes: ZWILLING offers retail engraving, and Herder offers corporate logos. Those services personalize a maker’s product. For your own specifications, packaging and repeat production, discuss the scope with a dedicated OEM knife manufacturer; adapting an existing design through private-label manufacturing can reduce development work.

Compare quotations and delivery dates on the same basis

The WÜSTHOF and ZWILLING examples form the closest retail comparison here: similarly sized chef’s knives listed in the US. A Böker folding knife and GÜDE nakiri serve different customers. Use the retail examples to understand positioning, then request trade quotations at your actual quantity, including packaging, freight, insurance and destination charges.

Separate sampling, production completion and destination delivery. A stocked retailer’s dispatch estimate and a bespoke factory schedule describe different stages. Agree permitted sales channels, warranty handling and replenishment terms before building a promotion around the range.

Keep origin and specifications at model level

Record the exact SKU, manufacturing country, steel, handle and mechanism on the purchase order. Approve substitutions before shipment. Carry that same information into the product page and packaging: German headquarters and German steel are useful facts, but neither establishes where the finished knife was made.

Steel grade alone also leaves important differences unresolved. F. DICK Premier Plus and Burgvogel Oliva both name X50CrMoV15, yet geometry, bolster, handle and heat treatment affect their use. Our kitchen knife steel guide explains the material trade-offs.

Approve a sample and an inspection standard

For kitchen knives, compare the same ingredients and cutting board, recording cutting effort, food release, hand comfort and edge condition. A 61–62 HRC folding knife and a 56 HRC kitchen knife serve different tasks; hardness is one property, not an overall quality score.

A corrosion-test chamber at LeeKnives in China. Corrosion resistance requires a different assessment from hardness.

CATRA’s product evaluation service separates cutting performance, hardness, corrosion resistance and handle security. Match a test report to the selected model and compare results under equivalent methods and conditions.

Keep an approved sample and an inspection record covering SKU and batch, dimensions and tolerances, handle fit, edge condition, finish and packaging. For folders, add blade centring, opening and closing, and the specified lock. Agree how defects and material substitutions will be handled. Our knife testing guide provides a practical starting point.

A separate manufacturing route for your own brand

If customers specifically want German manufacture, keep that requirement in the sourcing brief. If the commercial goal is your own knife range with a defined specification and repeat supply, a China-based OEM partner is a separate option worth comparing.

LeeKnives is a Yangjiang-based manufacturer with OEM experience dating to 1993. Our OEM knife manufacturing service covers drawings, samples and production, with a published estimate of roughly 30–45 days for mass production after sample approval, depending on complexity. Sampling and freight need their own allowance.

Bring a target customer, quantity, steel, blade dimensions, handle material and packaging brief. We can then discuss a production route and inspection requirements around the product you want to sell, with its Chinese manufacturing origin stated clearly.

Frequently asked questions

Which knife brands make knives in Germany?

Examples include WÜSTHOF Classic, the specified ZWILLING Pro model, F. DICK Premier Plus, GÜDE, Burgvogel, Robert Herder and selected Böker, OTTER and PUMA products. GIESSER also identifies German factory production. Check the exact range, especially where a company has international product families.

What are the best German knife brands?

For kitchens, compare WÜSTHOF, ZWILLING, F. DICK, GÜDE, Burgvogel and Robert Herder by handling, maintenance and price. For German pocket knife brands, investigate Böker and OTTER; PUMA is particularly relevant to hunting. The best choice depends on the use and customer, rather than a single ranking across unrelated products.

Are all Böker knives made in Germany?

No. Böker’s official FAQ distinguishes German production from Böker Plus, Böker Arbolito, Magnum and US-made products. The BRLW discussed here is explicitly listed as German-made; record the origin separately for other models.

Are PUMA SGB knives made in Germany?

PUMA describes SGB as German steel combined with international processing, separate from its classic German-made line. Check the product’s manufacturing origin rather than treating the steel description as a finished-product claim.

Can German knife manufacturers make private label products?

Some may agree to specific projects, but an OEM programme should be confirmed directly. WÜSTHOF and ZWILLING have no publicly advertised private-label programme. Engraving and corporate-logo services are narrower arrangements; an own-brand design requires explicit manufacturing and branding terms.
